I love fairs. And I have a feeling that I'm not alone. There's just something about the sun setting on flashing rides, the sweet aroma of fair food, and smiling families that's… magical.
The Ferris wheel, fried dough, and adorable cows – these are just a few of my favorite fair things, discovered this summer at the Washington County Fair in Greenwich, NY. Julia Reed, our multimedia producer (and photographer for this blog post) and I had a great time in Greenwich – join us on this photo tour.
The folks in Greenwich offered plenty of fried dough, a county fair staple. To make your own fried dough at home, check out our County Fair Fried Dough recipe.
How about this soft pretzel? We have recipes for soft pretzels, too, both "regular" and sourdough.
And we can't forget the exhibits and competitions!
King Arthur Flour sponsors baking contests at over 130 fairs and festivals all over the country every year. Our mission as a company is to inspire bakers and to share the joy of baking; we love being able to do that while taking part in America's great fair tradition.
Often, winning recipes from these contests are shared with us.
Our test kitchen loves this Caramel Apple Pie, submitted by Anita Newell of Groveton, NH. Anita took the blue ribbon at the Lancaster Fair in New Hampshire last year.
It’s always fun to visit our hard-working fair contest coordinators, and to meet the contest entrants to wish them luck. Everyone who dropped off baked goods was happy to chat with us, and have us take a picture of them with their entry.
The judges sample whole wheat bread, one of the many entries in the baking competition.
Greenwich, host of the Washington County Fair, happens to be the hometown of Michael Bittel, King Arthur Flour's senior vice-president and general manager of wholesale/co-CEO. We couldn’t pass up a chance to visit Michael and his family while we were in town.
Both of Michael’s sons, Reagan and Christian, showed their cows at the fair. Look how calm 10-year-old Reagan is!
Reagan finished in the top 10 of 175 kids in the showmanship class.
We had a lot of fun, and can’t wait for our next fair visit. Maybe we’ll see you there – meet you at the Ferris wheel!
