Interestingly, my mother began cooking her pumpkin puree in the late 1950s and I now always do. She didn't like the 'raw' flavor of the pumpkin, so adjusted the pumpkin recipe (probably the Libby's?) accordingly, cooking the puree for some time, adding the spices and sugar, and moving on from there.
