Replace the plate or counter or whatever with an aluminum sheet pan. Aluminum is one of the best conductors of heat in the kitchen. The stick of butter will soften in half the time. If you're really in a hurry, leave the stick wrapped and roll it to a new side every 5 minutes or so.
