I generally unwrap and drop the butter stick(s) into the mixing bowl to soften. If I want it sooner, I'll slice it and spread the butter pats across the bowl. And yes, in a pinch, I've microwaved. Horizontal works fine when I want it in the butter dish for dinner (or fresh bread!) - but for baking, I'll unwrap and stand the stick(s) vertically in a 2-c measuring cup. It's the best way to keep it from falling over while the tray rotates.
