The "frosting" I grew up with as a kid was called boiled frosting, White Mountain frosting, 7-Up frosting, etc. It's essentially a whipped sugar syrup (using both Karo and table sugar). This recipe and its variations have come down through the mountain people on both sides of the family. You can add flavorings and food coloring; my Mom had a version with 7-Up instead of water. Karo is cheap; butter and flour were not.
