Many of your questions may come down to personal opinion or circumstance, however I can tell you air fryers generally use less electricity than a conventional oven and also saves quite a bit of space. You can't bake everything you normally could in a home oven, but it does give you a range of options to bake in a less equipped kitchen. While air fryers have been steadily gaining popularity for about three years now, they certainly did become trendy but I think they serve a need for some more efficiently than a home oven. 

The amount of testing for each recipe can depend entirely on the nature of the recipe or blog and can range from a few weeks worth of testing for simpler recipes/techniques to several months for more complicated recipes. Happy baking!
