Hi Carole, it's hard to say exactly what caused your butter to leak, but if your oven tends to run cool, this could cause the butter to melt out before the crust has set. If you had very large pieces of butter that weren't properly coated with flour, this might also cause leakage. I would try to take a little more time to coat the butter with flour during the first step of this process by rubbing and tossing the butter in the flour until the flour begins to resemble cornmeal (with some larger pieces of butter remaining). I would also recommend using an oven thermometer to make sure your oven is up to temperature before baking your pie.
