Hi Vicki, it's difficult to say. Equal parts baking soda and baking powder in a chocolate cake that contains buttermilk is not that unusual (see our Cute and Small Chocolate Cake recipe). On the other hand, our Favorite Fudge Cake recipe, which also contains buttermilk, gets the job done with just baking soda. The only real way to tell is to try the recipe both ways and see which texture and flavor you prefer.
