This is, literally, an old wive's tale. It is not better. It's just more fun. A swift clean blow with the edge of a knife is the best, but you should always crack an egg into a glass to examine it before adding it to anything. Besides, the last egg always has to be cracked another way. It also means the egg is getting cracked twice, so it really demolishes the shell.
