There could be a few reasons your bread came out heavy, Nikki. The most common reasons (if you are getting a nice puffy texture during the second rise) are: 1) your dough is over proofing and then collapsing during baking, or 2) your dough is not kneaded and/or shaped well enough and it can't hold it's body while rising and baking causing it to pancake out on you instead of rising up and trapping all those wonderful air bubbles.
