I never feed my starter before I use it (unless there's not enough). I take it out of the fridge and let it warm up either by letting it sit out for a few hours or by putting it in the "proof" setting on my toaster oven (a wonderful thing!). Then I make my dough and feed the starter, wait for the starter to show some activity, then bung it back into the fridge until next time. I generally bake once a week or every 5 days or so.
