I recall a gardening guide that suggested planting buckwheat an barley in the very early spring, along wiling dint radishes. The grains for the soil, the little roots for insects to lay their eggs and hatch their larvae. They are ready to be pull in about three weeks. They are ten destroyed. The grains (yes I know that buckwheat is technically not a grain) are ployghrd in as compost. No chemicals involved. Win-win all around.
