Hi Juliette~Regarding plates from thrift stores: Similarly, my friend picks them up at yard sales and does the same thing you mention. She also picks up inexpensive silverware to take on picnics so as not to have to use plastic ware. She takes home and washes, reuses, and if some gets lost--no worries.
