Hi TobyCat, we generally don't recommend a cotton towel for covering your dough in the bowl because it can allow too much airflow and, especially in the winter or under very dry conditions, can cause the surface of the dough to become crusty. Moistening the towel can help, but I find the towel gets cool very fast and may ultimately cause the dough to become cooler than is desireable.
