While some margarine brands may indeed not have any dairy products in them, others include buttermilk and whey in their ingredients. Vegan butter substitutes like Earth Balance distinguish themselves by their lack of dairy and high performance in baking applications. If you are not vegan, the potential allergy-inducing ingredients matter less as long as you are using a butter substitute that is designed specifically for baking and not just for use as a spread on toast.
