My family has been in the appliance business for 65 years and I purposely purchased a non-self-defrosting freezer because I know everything like meat, seafood, baked items, etc. will last longer without the constant temperature change of auto defrosting. Of course it is a royal pain to manually defrost - something my husband is doing at this moment with a few choice words!
