Hi Zac, when it comes to tinkering, these choices are totally up to you! If you feel the original cake and frosting flavors complement your additions, then you can certainly leave them in. However, if you're concerned that they will overshadow or conflict with your chosen flavors, then it is also fine to leave them out. Personally, I would leave the vanilla in the cake, but omit the almond flavor (which can be quite strong). As far as the frosting goes, I would either omit the vanilla completely, or use a small amount as an underlying flavor with the basil.
