Thanks for reading this article, Evelyn, and for taking the time to share your thoughts back with us. While we can’t identify a place in our article where Mariela has made such a claim about all Americans, she has drawn a lens over systems, practices, and history. We’re genuinely glad to hear that your experience as a person of color has been different than Mariela’s or the data which reflects increased barriers for and discrimination against people of color. If you haven’t looked through it already, we included a link to a study on the barriers and contributions for U.S.-born and immigrant Latino entrepreneurs just beside the paragraph you outlined. You can find that, here

We invited Mariela to share her authentic experience and perspective, illuminating this recipe through buoyancy and fascination, as well as through what’s weighty and challenging. Her discomfort with stolen land in the U.S. and the perpetuation of its effects is part of that. You'll have seen that she also mentions her pride at being a 1st generation kid in the U.S.

Ultimately, we aim to spread the joy of baking and build community through our recipes and resources, and we hope you feel encouraged to continue exploring our content as we do so!
