Hey there, Trish! You'll want to place the piping tip inside the bag before filling it. Check out the very beginning of the article for Susan's tip on how to ensure you cut the bag to the proper size for the tip you're using. If you're be using multiple colors or different styles of piping tips to create texture, you'll want to look into using a "coupler." A coupler has two pieces, a piece that you insert into the bag before filling it like you would the piping tip and a ring to hold the tip in place. Once the first piece is in place in the bag, you can put your piping tip on the outside of the bag and then screw the ring on to hold everything together. Then you' can just pop the ring off and put your new tip on or put the tip on another piping bag with your other frosting in it. We hope this can help and happy baking!
