Hi Nancy, the two most common reasons for bread to split are under proofing which results in a large gas expansion during oven spring, and insufficient shaping. If your seams are not well sealed when shaping, they will provide a path of least resistance for gas to escape and cause splitting. Good luck and happy baking!
