I'm also delighted there are others who never discard. I put my starter tightly covered in the fridge, ignore it for months because I don't use it that frequently. It develops a dark liquid on top. Before I want to use it, I take it out of the fridge and feed it small amounts (like 3 oz of water and 3 oz of wheat flour) once a day for a couple days before I want to use it, use what I need, and put the rest back in the fridge. Discard seems so wasteful to me and in my case it's not necessary. I've been using the same starter for at least 5 years. Last year I switched from feeding it with white flour to feeding it with white whole wheat flour and that seemed to improve the taste of my breads, even breads made exclusively with white flour.
