I like your different ideas. I've managed to make a decent fruit cake with dehydrated cherries, blueberries, apricots, currants, yellow raisins, candied ginger and pecans. All that ends up getting a brandy brushing every 7-10 days. I usually make it the first of November so by Christmas it is ready. Granted by then the thing is more like a door stop it is so heavy but it's really good. I think I'm going to use some of your ideas for next year and try your approach instead of a loaf. It would definitely make it easier to give some away cut in small squares. I like that.
