I suffered through the instructions to add the shield halfway through baking....requires a lot of manual dexterity to attach to a cold pie plate, but when attaching to a 400 F pie plate with hot pads....it's impossible! So the last time I made a pie I attached it to the cold pie plate! Before putting into oven! Much easier to remove the shield from a hot pie plate half-way through baking and the crust was evenly cooked.
