Hi Philip, thanks for reaching out to our team and for expressing your concern about the plastic packaging used for some of our flour products! Ramifications around plastic are a regular and serious part of our conversations. As a founding B Corp, caring for the environment is woven right into our triple bottom line of people, planet, profit. Materials for food packaging — including their benefits and potential impacts — are carefully considered every time we bring a new product to market. One of our considerations is how durable the packaging is, because when packaging breaks this can mean reshipping products, which also has a negative environmental impact.
We are offering resealable plastic bags for some of our specialty flours and products as we work to find new packaging types that perform better when shipped and limit damages. These resealable plastic bags are recyclable #4, which means they can be recycled by bringing them to many retail locations which accept soft plastic. Additionally, we continue to watch the market for new packaging technologies that can lessen our environmental impact. We have no plans to change the paper bag packaging that is used for our Signature flours.
This subject is important to us and you can rely on our team to continually evaluate ourselves as we look for ways to meet the growing need for baking products while also lessening our overall environmental footprint as a company.
