We're sorry to hear that, Michelle! Most often when a starter molds it's because bad bacteria have taken over. To prevent this from happening, you want to keep the starter covered and feed it regularly. A starter that gets forgotten on the counter for a couple of days is more likely to succumb to mold and bacteria so be sure to keep track of the starter and stick to the feeding schedule.
