Hi Annamay, with the way yeast is manufactured these days, it isn't necessary. But older recipes often don't reflect that. It'll never hurt to bloom it, and if you're unsure if your yeast is still active and want that visual confirmation of bubbles, you can always add it to some of the water from your recipe first. Otherwise, you can just throw it in with the other dry ingredients.
