My grandma lived with us and made bread (among other things). My favorite snack was buttered toast with hot mashed potatoes, salt, and pepper on top. She also made hot milk toast for an upset tummy; hot milk poured over buttered toast with salt and pepper. (You had to eat it fast or it was sooo yucky but eaten fast it was good.) She would also get mad at us because we would sneak into the kitchen and cut off the ends of her fresh bread. Since she made several loaves at once and there were five kids, that meant that underneath the towels the cooling bread was usually missing many ends.
