Great suggestions! I've long used vintage drinking or dessert glasses to flatten cookies, since I was lucky enough to find a couple with rosette and grid patterned bases, but I never thought of trying a potato masher or meat tenderizer.
Thanks also for the pointers on dough types. I have a favourite sugar cookie recipe that says to flatten, but never retains the pattern, and now I know why.
