I use mine (Creuset) all the time, preheating it empty. If your lid handle is the hard black plastic, it is better to unscrew it and to fill the hole with foil. Personally, I could not unscrew it so I leave it on and never had a real problem. However, mine is very old so I do not care so much about my handle. If it was brand new I would definitely try harder to remove the handle.
