Hi Marlane, I once experimented by adding some savory seasoning to the crumpet batter (I used our pizza seasoning), but I discovered that the pure, unadulterated sourdough crumpets were more versatile and satisfying. If you'd like to experiment with add-ins, here are a few ideas we've listed in the Tips From Our Bakers section of this recipe: the flavor of these crumpets or pancakes, while quite delicious with butter, syrup or jam, is equally good with savory additions. Try adding a half cup each of grated zucchini, cheese, apple, chives, or onion, or a combination of your own, and serve them with lunch or dinner. Try to keep additions to 1/2 cup, and small pieces (preferably grated) will incorporate better into the batter.
