@Debra and @Kat--I used a 4" jar ring to make mine today! It works just fine--I greased the ring with coconut oil, put it on the griddle right side up, and poured the batter in. Worked great! The only thing I would say is the rings don't seem to be tall enough to get that amazing rise, so your crumpets won't be as well-developed (possibly even underdone in the middle). Also, after a while, the rings get a little deformed from the heat; my last one leaked out the sides bc the lid didn't sit flush anymore.
PS Made from a 2-day-old starter, definitely tasted yummy. :)
