I made these as a kid! (The recipe I used had cocoa though, good chocolate wasn't easily accessible where I lived). If you add cocoa to the outside (1:1 with sugar) they end up deep chocolate tone-on-tone, like a jacquard. Or a half-teaspoon of good ground ginger or cinnamon (like Penzey's) -- flavor oomph!
