I still make and love lemon sauce with gingerbread! Here's the recipe I use:
1/2 c. sugar
1 T flour
1 T cornstarch
pinch salt
1 c. boiling water
2 T butter
1 1/2 T lemon juice
1 t lemon zest
1/8 t nutmeg, optional
Combine sugar, flour, cornstarch, salt & nutmeg in saucepan. Gradually blend in water. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring constantly until thick and clear, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in butter, juice and zest. Serve warm with warm gingerbread.
