Thank you for your response. The sugar started to melt after the second hour mark - I'd been stirring every 25 min or so. (I took the pan out of the oven to make sure I had it all stirred together, even into the corners of the pan. I used three cups of sugar and my 9x13 Pyrex baking dish.
