If you don't want to go through the effort and don't need the sugar right away, try using sugar as 'pie weights' in blind baking. Line a pie shell with tinfoil and add 2-3 c sugar as the 'weights' for the blind baking. Cool and save the sugar for another few uses. It keeps well and, over time, will take on a toasted color.
