Made these with brown sugar substitute and they worked fine, but I did add more than the recipe suggested because I was using 90% chocolate for the chocolate pieces which is not very sweet (Lindt bar that can be purchased at the grocery store in my area, and tastes great). Our preferred version is to use half of the amount of chocolate, and replace the other half (1/4 cup) with unsweetened shredded coconut (soaked in water for a minute or two if it is really dry - drain well before adding).
