Hi J.G., it sounds like your pie was mostly a success, especially for your very first apple pie! Congratulations! For the gap, you may find this blog post helpful. I'm actually a little surprised about the dry filling, as usually excessive juiciness is more of an issue. It may be related to the type of apples you used, or perhaps you added a touch too much thickener? If you're able to weigh your flour and other ingredients, this will likely improve your results. If you don't have a scale, we recommend this method of measuring your flour by cups.
