Hi there, Dianne! We're sorry to hear that you're having some trouble. An overnight starter or a sourdough starter should be fairly thin in consistency, it'll be similar to that of a thick batter. The starter typically only makes up for a portion of the dough though so it shouldn't make for an overly soft and sticky dough. If you're adding a starter of any kind to a recipe you should remove water and flour from the recipe to account for the flour and liquid in the starter.
