Actually, the accepted ration of beans to alcohols is 1 ounce of beans to 8 ounces of alcohol. The FDA (food and drug administration) has a standard of .8 ounces of bean to 8 ounces of alcohol. This is why people round up to one ounce for single strength vanilla. Many people enjoy double or even triple strength. Any ratio less than what is listed above is NOT vanilla extract but vanilla flavoring.
Once you enjoy grade A beans (each country of origin has a unique flavor profile) in a variety of quality Vodka, run or even bourbon, you will never again be satisfied with anything else for your baking needs. It takes patience (1 year at least) but you will be richly rewarded.
