It sounds like you might have been using a recipe that didn't have enough (or any?) fat in it. The butter, shortening, oil, or lard will help keep your tortillas pliable and soft. It's also important that the dough is properly hydrated so it doesn't dry out and become brittle when cooked. Using a recipe that calls for at least a brief rest period should help with this.
