My mother had a "signature" cake -- a pound cake -- that lots of folks loved and asked her to make. I had the recipe and, when my mother passed away last year, made the cake as part of my contribution to my family's first Thanks giving without Mother. Unfortunately, the copy of Mother's pound cake recipe that I had listed sugar as an ingredient, but didn't include it in the directions for adding it to the batter! The cake looked fine but tasted pretty much of nothing, as my sister-in-law discovered when she tried to eat it -- right before it dawned on me that I still had sugar sitting on the counter that didn't get into the cake and called to warn her not to eat it!
