In the house I rent, it has an older gas oven with a pilot light. Would that be too warm for the bread to rise? If so, what about setting it on top of the stove, as it is rather warm with the heat from the oven pilot rising, as well as the two pilot lights for starting the stovetop burners. I'm new to baking bread, and I have a couple kitties who are quite curious, so inside something would be "safer" for the dough!
