I have to disagree. I make a lot of recipes that call for buttermilk and my best substitution is lemon juice in whole milk. I always have both on hand. Commercially bottled lemon juice always has the same ph balance and whole milk is rich enough so that the combination turns out every bit as good as commercial buttermilk.
