I love baking with buttermilk. Funny story, when I was turning 10 I found a recipe for a buttermilk chocolate cake that I wanted for my birthday. My mother refused to make it. For her cake came from a box or nothing. I insisted and she relented and said I could make it myself. My mother kept buttermilk powder on hand for making corn bread and I had seen her use it many times and as far as I knew that was what buttermilk was. She set me up in the kitchen after lunch and left me to make my cake only coming in to check on me as I was preparing to put the cake in the over at which time she discovered my mistake, using 2/3 cup of buttermilk powder rather than reconstituting it. With my second try I was so flustered that I forgot the baking soda. I never did get that cake. I need to look up that recipe and see how it is.
