Uh oh! It sounds like some of the ingredients in the batter weren't quite as homogenous as intended. When cake bakes unevenly in different pans or wells of cupcakes, that's a sign that there are pockets of leavener and/or sugar that were stuck and had a bit of an explosion of energy in the oven, and it's happened to all of us. Ensuring all ingredients are room temperature can really help in making an ultra-homogenous batter.
