Goodness, Lorna, it definitely sounds like something went awry somewhere! Perhaps the cups were filled up a little too high and couldn't contain the batter? If there are explosions with cake, it's usually because there are pockets of sugar and/or leavener, or too much sugar. But we're glad that they were delicious anyway!
