Betsy, it sounds like the chocolate/toffee bond was not sufficient. The recipe calls for first laying down a layer of nuts and then adding half the chocolate. Don't melt the chocolate as the sharp pieces of chocolate or choc chips create a jagged substrate to which the hot toffee will adhere. Add the hot toffee, then the remaining chocolate, and the remaining nuts. Smoothing out the chocolate will inhibit the toffee's ability to bond. By following the sequence in the recipe, you'll achieve better adherence and less separating of the layers.
