The trick my mother taught me, was after you've mixed your custard filling, don't put it in the crust to bake. Put your custard in a pot on medium heat, but stay with it and stir it constantly. Your custard will start to thicken. Once it starts to thicken, that's when I pour it into my pie shell, then bake as you normally would. The pie is now more dense
