Hi, I'd like to propose an even less wasteful method of bring up the starter to your quantity. I'll use the 454g example.
First take 20 grams of starter and put into a new jar. Feed this 20g each of water and flour. This is now your starter.
Now take 17 of the remaining 40g and put it in a larger container. Discard (or save for discard recipes) the other 23. Feed this 17g with 17g each of flour water. Now you're at 51. Do it again to put you at 153. Finally a third feeding should give you a nice healthy starter of 459g. Now just discard the extra 5 and you're ready to bake. Only 22g sacrificed vice 106g (40 at the first feeding and 66 at the end).
