If you’ve had an olive or a corn tortilla, you’ve eaten food prepared with lye. Always follow a reputable recipe precisely, measure carefully, use a non-reactive bowl (glass is best I think), don’t splash, wear gloves, and you’ll be fine. Lye isn’t poisonous, just caustic.
